This case study examines the A467 improvement scheme in Leicestershire, delivered by Galliford Try on behalf of Leicestershire County Council.
The project extended an existing dual carriageway in both directions and increased lane capacity at the roundabouts at Bennion Road and the A46 junction. It introduced traffic signal control at both junctions and delivered improvements to pedestrian and cycling routes, including upgraded crossing facilities.
A hybrid power system combining solar PV with battery storage was used to power the site offices, reducing emissions by 220 tCO2e compared to conventional diesel generators.
This is highlighted as a replicable approach for construction sites across the West of England region.
The scheme generated £2.2 million in social value through initiatives including engagement with 180 local students at STEM events and procurement from suppliers within a 20-mile radius, supporting local skills and employment. In 2021, the project won the national Considerate Constructors Scheme Award for Most Considerate Site in the £7.5m–£10m bracket, and also received ICE EMMA awards recognising its carbon and social value credentials.
Funding came from multiple sources: Leicester City Council drew on a £16.2m Local Growth Fund allocation via the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership, and National Highways contributed through its Growth and Housing Fund.
